Safety Checking Electrical Appliances

(CPD Points=8)

This course is designed for people who need to inspect, test and fit tags to electrical equipment on a regular basis.

The course consists of learning topics in the following modules:

Test & Tag Electrical Appliances
Explosion 1: Test & Tag Electrical Appliances

  1. NSW Occupational Health & Safety Legislation
    1. NSW OH&S Act 2000
    2. NSW OH&S Regulation 2001
    3. NSW WorkCover Code of Practice for Electrical Work
    4. Australian Standard AS/NZS3760 for Electrical Inspection
    5. Australian Standard AS3012
    6. Records of Electrical Testing

     

  1. Basic Electrical Theory
    1. Introduction to electrical principles
    2. Electrical units (amps, volts, watts, ohms)
    3. Basic calculations using ohm’s law
    4. Measurement using instruments against electrical parameters

     

  1. Electrical Safety
    1. Shock & Severity of electrocution
    2. Effects of current flow
    3. Circuit protection
    4. Earthing
    5. Safety Switches & RCD's

     

  1. Inspection & Testing to AS/NZS3760:2003
    1. Classes of equipment
    2. Types of Tests
    3. Using Portable Appliance Testing Equipment
    4. 240V appliance testing
    5. 3 phase and 415V equipment testing
    6. Electrical plugs & sockets
    7. Earth Leakage Testing
    8. Testing of Surge protected devices
    9. Testing of Earth leakage circuit breakers

Participants will also receive training on several leading brand Portable Appliance Tester models and tuition in the following:

- Testing of Double Insulated Devices

- Testing of Earthed Appliances

- Testing of Extension lead sets

- Fitting and writing out the tags

- Maintaining the mandatory records of testing

Participants will receive course notes, copies of relevant sections of the legislation, notes on electrical principles and on completion a Statement of Attainment in Electrical Safety and Laminated Yellow card with personal testing qualification number.
